Google Bard AI differs from the usual Google search because it is more conversational when answering our questions. Since then, we’ve also found that, once trained, LaMDA can be fine-tuned to significantly improve the sensibleness and specificity of its responses.

Google’s Bard AI chatbot is no longer limited to pulling answers from just the web — it can now scan your Gmail, Docs, and Drive to help you find the information you’re looking for. With the new integration, you can ask Bard to do things like find and summarize the contents of an email or even highlight the most important points of a document you have stored in Drive. With Bard, Google aims to solidify its presence in the AI chatbot space while maintaining its dominance in the search engine market. Google has unveiled Bard, an AI chatbot designed to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s chatbot in their Bing search engine. Gemini uses Google’s proprietary LLM named Gemini Pro, instead of the GPT series, which is the technology that many popular AI chatbots are using.

In its July wave of updates, Google added multimodal search, allowing users the ability to input pictures as well as text to the chatbot. Android users will have the option to download the Gemini app from the Google Play Store or opt-in through Google Assistant. Once they do, they will be able to access Gemini’s assistance from the app or via anywhere that Google Assistant would typically be activated, including pressing the power button, corner swiping, or even saying «Hey Google.» Then, in December 2023, Google upgraded Gemini again, this time to Gemini, the company’s most capable and advanced LLM to date. Specifically, Gemini uses a fine-tuned version of Gemini Pro for English.

She instead describes Bard as a collaborative, creative tool that you should use once you already have the information you need. You can also use images in your prompts thanks to Google Bard’s multimodal functionality from PaLM 2. Eventually, the chatbot will be able to generate completely new AI images thanks to an Adobe Firefly integration.

However, we aren’t the only ones that found issues with Bard’s plagiarism. In their testing, our sister site Tom’s Hardware found that Google Bard plagiarized content from their own testing, claiming that it was Google’s own. When Tom’s Hardware Editor-in-Chief Avram Piltch confronted Bard with the allegation of thievery, the chatbot apologized. And when you’re not satisfied with the answers, you can click «Google it» and go to Google Search for more insight. This feature initially got a boost in Bard’s first «Experiment updates» so that you get an increased number of Search options based on your prompt if you want to explore further.

Google’s Bard chatbot can now find answers in your Gmail, Docs, Drive

We’re excited for this phase of testing to help us continue to learn and improve Bard’s quality and speed. Bard also integrated with a number of Google apps and services, including YouTube, Maps, Hotels, Flights, Gmail, Docs and Drive, letting users apply Bard to their personal content. As recently as December, we’d heard Google execs were worried that despite investing heavily in AI technology, moving too fast to roll it out could harm the company’s reputation. Earlier this morning, Google announced it’s laying off more than 12,000 employees and focusing on AI as a domain of primary importance.

Google AI is developing projects in fields such as healthcare, quantum computing, driverless cars, energy consumption and online search. Recent developments in Google’s AI ecosystem include the incorporation of generative AI into its search engine with Google Bard. All you have to do is ask Gemini to «draw,» «generate,» or «create» an image and include a description with as much — or as little — detail as is appropriate. Google’s decision to use its own LLMs — LaMDA, PaLM 2, and Gemini — was a bold one because some of the most popular AI chatbots right now, including ChatGPT and Copilot, use a language model in the GPT series. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Google teams have also been testing a beta LaMDA chat against ChatGPT, itself. In separate documents, it selected examples of prompts and answers in side-by-side comparisons. Google has developed other AI services that have yet to be released to the public. The tech giant typically treads lightly when it comes to AI products and doesn’t release them until the company is confident about a product’s performance. With the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, though, and alarmist warnings about Google’s impending demise, it seems the company is revising its tactics. In the past, Google has said it’s avoided launching certain AI products because of the potential “reputational damage.” Now, it seems the reputation it wants to avoid is one of being behind the times. «We’re so excited by the potential of generative AI, and the opportunities it will unlock,» Kurian wrote in a blog post.

Like OpenAI’s GPT-3.5, the model behind ChatGPT, the engineers at Google have trained LaMDA on hundreds of billions of parameters, letting the AI “learn” natural language on its own. The result is a chatbot that can answer any question in surprisingly natural and conversational language. Marketed as a «ChatGPT alternative with superpowers,» ChatSonic is an AI chatbot powered by Google Search with an AI-based text generator, WriteSonic, that lets users discuss topics in real time to create text or images. After rebranding to Gemini, Google introduced a paid tier in addition to the free web application. For $20/month, users get access to the Gemini Advanced option, which runs on Gemini Ultra — a more capable version of the Gemini language models. The recent launch of OpenAI’s AI chatbot ChatGPT has raised alarms within Google, according to reports from The New York Times.

It aimed to allow for more natural language queries, rather than keywords, for search. Bard’s AI was trained around natural-sounding conversational queries and responses. Instead of just giving a list of answers, it provided context to the responses.

The user interface has been tweaked to integrate a new Bard «privacy hub,» and it will also feature contextual information. The chatbot also becomes available in over 40 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, German and Spanish, Google officials said. Unlike ChatGPT, which is trained on data ending in 2021, Bard pulls information from the web and can «provide fresh, high-quality responses,» according to Pichai. For example, someone can ask Bard to explain NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or ask whether the piano or guitar are easier to learn, according to the post. A version of the model, called Gemini Pro, is available inside of the Bard chatbot right now. Also, anyone with a Pixel 8 Pro can use a version of Gemini in their AI-suggested text replies with WhatsApp now, and with Gboard in the future.

Since then we’ve continued to make investments in AI across the board, and Google AI and DeepMind are advancing the state of the art. Today, the scale of the largest AI computations is doubling every six months, far outpacing Moore’s Law. At the same time, advanced generative AI and large language models are capturing the imaginations of people around the world.

Bard will be released to specialist product testers on Monday and will then be made more widely available to the public in the coming weeks, Google said. Like ChatGPT, Bard is powered by a so-called large language model – in Google’s case called LaMDA.

However, like ChatGPT, Google’s AI technology isn’t fully there yet — responses may be inaccurate or even offensive, according to Google. Bard is in heated competition with other top generative AI technologies, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Bing conversational AI tool (which is also based on ChatGPT). Microsoft has added ChatGPT functionality to its suite of Microsoft 365 business productivity and collaboration apps through its own Copilot chatbot assistant. That’s why it is crucial always to verify, fix, and edit any response from Bard or chatbots that use language models. Like many recent language models, including BERT and GPT-3, it’s built on Transformer, a neural network architecture that Google Research invented and open-sourced in 2017. That architecture produces a model that can be trained to read many words (a sentence or paragraph, for example), pay attention to how those words relate to one another and then predict what words it thinks will come next.

Beyond generating new images, Bard does currently support images in responses, including photos from Google Search and the Knowledge Graph. Like all AI chatbots, Bard must learn and be trained to give the correct answer from inaccurate or misleading information, as was evident during its first demo. AI training is an endless, compute-intensive process since there is always new information to learn. Gemini Pro is available in more than 230 countries and territories and more than 40 languages. Gemini Advanced in available in 150 countries at the time of this writing.

On the other hand, this could leave Bard in the good graces of publishers compared to Bing Chat and ChatGPT, which could ultimately prove a competitive advantage in the future. We’ve recently put it to the test in a handful of ways, from asking it controversial sci-fi questions to putting it head-to-head with the new Bing with ChatGPT to see what phone you should buy. Both gave us some enlightenment on Bard’s abilities — and shortcomings — so be sure to check them out. Google is quick to point out some of Bard’s responses may be inaccurate. Google sees it as a complementary experience to Google Search — which just got its own huge AI upgrade. Still, you’ll see a «Google It» button next to responses when you use Bard that takes you to Search.

He proudly sports many tattoos, including an Arsenal tattoo, in honor of the team that causes him to yell at the TV the most. Google is giving web publishers the option to hide their content from Bard. If publishers do choose to block Bard, that could greatly limit the utility of its connection to the internet when providing answers.

It’s an AI chatbot, and it’s very much meant to be a rival to the ever-popular ChatGPT. Google Bard was initially announced on Feb. 6, 2023, with a vague release date. Many believed that Google felt the pressure of ChatGPT’s success and positive press leading them to rush Bard out before it was ready. For example, during a live demo by Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, it provided a query with a very wrong answer. The best part is that Google is offering users a two-month free trial as part of the new plan. According to Gemini’s FAQ, as of February, the chatbot is available in over 40 languages, a major advantage over its biggest rival, ChatGPT, which is available only in English.

However, similar to OpenAI and Microsoft’s chatbots, Bard has not been released to a broader audience due to concerns about generating untrustworthy information and potential biases against certain groups. The company’s internal teams, including AI safety researchers, are working collaboratively to accelerate approval for a range of new AI products. Since OpenAI’s release of ChatGPT and Microsoft’s introduction of chatbot technology in Bing, Google has prioritized AI as its central focus. This strategic move is to adopt new AI technology while preserving the profitability of its search engine business. Bard is designed as a complementary experience to Google Search, allowing users to check its responses or explore sources across the web.

Bard does cite other content in its responses sometimes and links to the source. Bard’s double-check function searches Google for information similar to its generated content and provides a URL to the source of that information. ChatGPT uses Generative Pre-training Transformer 3 (GPT-3) or Generative Pre-training Transformer 4 (GPT-4) for the paid version. However, just like any other AI tool, it is essential to be cautious and thoroughly test and review all code for errors, bugs, and vulnerabilities before relying on it. At the February 8 AI event where Bard was unveiled, Google also announced AI tools being integrated in Google Maps. And as more concerns about plagiarism are raised, the more likely governments do something about it. Is already looking at a new AI regulation bill that could force Bard and ChatGPT to cite sources when they produce responses. It may be sorely needed, as Google just changed its privacy policy to allow its AI products to scrape the internet for your public data. Some people have started using ChatGPT and Bard to provide AI therapy due to the chatbots’ conversational abilities.

Beyond our own products, we think it’s important to make it easy, safe and scalable for others to benefit from these advances by building on top of our best models. Still, the release represents a significant step to stave off a threat to Google’s most lucrative business, its search engine.

However, it now also uses Pathways Language Model 2 (PaLM 2) to power Bard’s more advanced features such as coding and multimodal search (coming soon). A computer scientists team from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) of Singapore is unofficially calling the method a «jailbreak» but is more officially a «Masterkey» process. This system uses chatbots, including ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Microsoft Bing Chat, against one another in a two-part training method that allows two chatbots to learn each other’s models and divert any commands against banned topics. In January 2023, Microsoft signed a deal reportedly worth $10 billion with OpenAI to license and incorporate ChatGPT into its Bing search engine to provide more conversational search results, similar to Google Bard.
